My rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Something is up with Kasey, Lexi’s little sister. These girls live in a creepy old house that even Lexi admits seems scary. Their parents are a little distant, running around keeping busy with their jobs, and it seems like only Lexi is concerned with some of the changes in Kasey’s personality. Lexi wants to do all she can to help her sister but her sister just keeps retreating and spends more and more time in her room hanging out with her large doll collection. Then things get even weirder, like why do Kasey’s eyes seem to change from blue to a glowing green at times? And why is Kasey obsessed with a “school” project tracing the ancestry of the people in town? And why does she suddenly start talking about a mysterious friend who is the only one who cares about her? Lexi will have to get help from some unlikely sources in order to figure out what is going on and how to help her sister.

My thoughts: The cover definitely makes this book look scarier than it is. And thank goodness for that because I don’t really enjoy scary-scary stories! It has more of a mystery-suspense feel than horror because the book is about Lexi solving the problem and helping her sister.

I enjoyed Lexi’s growth over the course of the story because she starts out very isolated and negative and then when she realizes she can’t do it alone she branches out and accepts help. She doesn’t feel like she belongs anywhere and by the end, she’s discovered an unlikely friendship. There is also a little bit of romance in here but it is definitely a smaller side story to the main story - Lexi needs to figure out how to save her sister from an evil ghost!

I will say that Lexi learns to trust people a little more. That’s probably the main take away in this story. Sometimes it’s worth trusting people to help because you can’t always do it on your own, right?

I plan to read the next book in the sister series: From Bad to Cursed.

I have also read two of Katie Alender’s books: Famous Last Words and Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer. I have to say in terms of fear and suspense these two are more in the horror genre. So if you are looking for mystery with a side of horror, go with the Bad Girls Don’t Die. If you want horror with a side of mystery, go with Famous or Marie Antoinette.
