178 minutes after Wren died 5 years ago, she came back. That's right. Even after being shot 3 times in the chest, she is now stronger, faster, can heal any wound (except a direct shot to the head) and has less emotions, if any as a Reboot. Her barcode tattooed on her wrist shows her name and her number...the minutes she was dead...showing everyone exactly how badass she is at all times! Why? That's because there has never been another like Wren, who is the deadliest Reboot soldier who serves the Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation (HARC). Except when Callum 22 walks in as a new recruit, all that begins to change as he beings to change everything around him with his smile and ever-present emotions...will Wren 178 be able to ignore the pull between them? What about when he refuses a direct order? Will she be made to eliminate him? She has never felt like she does when she's with him. Can she let go of that and do what she's told? Or is she done taking orders as their perfect soldier?
My thoughts: I loved this one and cannot wait to get my hands on book 2! I felt like I was holding my breath for the whole second half of the book as I realized what was going to happen to Callum and then what Wren was going to have to do next! AHHH!
This is such a cool idea for a book. Immortals, but not really. Vampires, but not really. More of an apocalyptic outbreak that had a severe side-effect which resulted in these rather dangerous and amazing evolutionarily different beings who aren't really human anymore. Of course humans do what they always do and fear what they don't understand instead of trying to understand it/them and end up trying to destroy them. This of course just makes them want to destroy humans in turn, but somehow they are beaten and then become humanity's slaves and soldiers via this HARC going out into communities and meshing out "justice" as HARC sees fit. This is definitely a Young Adult novel in my opinion with the violent killings and also the random sexual partners of the Reboots, since they aren't seen as human beings, or beings really. They are almost seen as animals and so therefore treated as such which is rather horrifying at times. For example, they are made to strip down at one point before being allowed to enter a transport vehicle before going back because the time before a nutty Reboot smuggled something on and badness happened. Yikes! Stripping in the street to be searched...Tintera really does an amazing job of making you HATE the guards of HARC and all of the vile things they do and say towards the Reboots. It made me think of the Nazi's treatment of the Jews so many, many times in the book.
The fact that Reboots humanity varies depending on how long they were dead before they Reboot, or come back to life, is a brilliant concept that Tintera really plays with in the novel so well! I love how she matched up Callum and Wren. Brilliant! The most non-emotional Reboot and the most emotional Reboot finding a connection is perfection. Plus, there is this extreme mystery of what in the world are they experimenting on the under 50's with and why!? It becomes quite horrifying!
Wren as a main character is so well written with how broken she is without even knowing it. She fully admits that she has absolutely to miss from being a human because her life as one was so extremely terrible with her parents, so for her life as a Reboot as been the best part of her life so far in her opinion and why she as embraced it completely without questions. For Callum, it's just the opposite. He mourns for his human life and family.
Last thoughts: I cannot wait to see what happens next for Wren in Rebel! May seems SO far away from now to wait. :( If you liked Partials, or even Immortal Rules...you'll love Reboot!
