In the cold Minnesota weather, a recently transplanted Californian feels out of place. Katla Leblanc can’t believe how cold cold can be, and it’s only September! She’s already alienated some of the in-crowd, and her home-life isn’t perfect, what with her mom and dad’s divorce finalized and Stanley, her mom’s new beau. Then one dark night while waiting on a delivery of apples at her grandfather’s store, she sees a light on in the fabric store across the street.
By deciding to check it out, she soon finds herself in a strange world of folktales come to life; however, when she returns to her grandfather’s store only a few minutes have passed. What is she to think of her strange encounter with a group of old ladies claiming…no, it’s too strange to be real, right? With this surprising beginning, Katla now has to sort out who she really is and how she fits into a world that suddenly has more magic than she ever knew existed.
My Thoughts: A very interesting beginning pulled me right into this story with Kat’s meeting of the Stork ladies and her weird first interaction with Jack Snjosson, a boy who claims she should know him and has the coldest touch in the world.
The main character, Kat, loves fashion and is a little disconnected from her new community, which I understood because of her recent uprooting from California, but I did have a little trouble connecting with her at first because she seemed a little distant and shallow. However, since I can talk about her as if she is a person I know, you can probably guess that she grew on me as she settled into the community and her new magical abilities.
This first book in the trilogy very clearly introduces the characters and the elemental fight between good and evil that Kat will be involved in for the next two books. I’ve already grabbed book two and a bookmark and plan to start reading ASAP :)
