Review: Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede

Thirteenth Child (Frontier Magic, #1)Thirteenth Child
Author: Patricia C. Wrede
Series: Frontier Magic, Book 1
Released: April 15, 2009
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eff is the thirteenth child born into her magical family. This means she will only bring trouble to her family; at least that is what tradition says. She also has a twin brother, Lan, who is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he will have amazing magical abilities. To avoid the stigma put upon thirteenth children, Eff's parents decide to move west to the border between the civilized magic world and the untamed magical world.

Eff's story unfolds in this border town. We follow her as she grows into a young woman, learning about the different magic in the world. This is a very interesting frontier story; the world is creatively imaginative yet oh-so familiar. You will become attached to Eff and her struggles as a thirteenth child. You will also be drawn into the adventure of the frontier town and settlements as they face both magical and non-magical creatures of the West. I know I plan to pick up the next book in this series!
