My thoughts: This was fantastic! A western set in a United States that has been through a second civil war which broke the country into a dangerous land afterward. Plus, an MC who is kick-butt enough to get herself out of the horrific situation she's in and make her way in that dangerous world no matter what it costs her.
Pity is a tough main character with a very realistic outlook on life. She understands exactly what will happen to her if she doesn't do something about her future in her father's house and in the town she's lived in her whole life. Pity has lived a very tough beginning of her life and is determined to make the rest of it better by getting out anyway she can. Plus, her skill as a sharpshooter might just save her.
The characters that Pity meets up with out in the wild are a very interesting crew. In fact they happen to be from the most notorious city and be some of the closest to the most notorious person who runs that city. There is a ton of drama when it comes to the politics of that city and also of the country as a whole which makes things even more interesting. Then there's the "circus" side show that keeps that notorious city entertained. There were so many interesting pieces that are stitched together to make this fantastic quilt of a book.
Is there a 2nd book coming? At the end of the book it certainly seems like there's going to be more. Goodreads doesn't have a series listed though with this book. :( I hope there's going to be more! This one ends with a bang but in a satisfying way because it does wrap things up to a certain extent from this book. There are lingering questions that Pity still wants answered though and that's where she's headed at the end of the book is to find answers.
Final thoughts: If you love HBO's Westworld, you will love this book! Or if you like tough chicks and an interesting world I've never read before that has a Western spin then this one is for you.
